It's more appropriate to say that it's a catch-all word for the different ways we filter and process sound. Its core concept is that just because you can pick up a sound doesn't guarantee you're processing it.
Consider the sound of cars when strolling around town as an example. The blaring horns, thundering vehicles, and chatter of people going by are always in your ears. However, you're just hearing as you move. You're not paying attention to anyone sound. You're more than likely taking a step forwards and concentrating on getting to your target.
So, what's the big deal about this? This is due to auditory processing impairment, according to some in parenting circles.
Auditory processing disorder is a problem in filtering sounds and extracting useful information from them. It is frequently linked to a variety of developmental impairments, including autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
One of the most significant, though often overlooked, issues for people with these disorders is a lack of appreciation of how important auditory processing is in our daily lives.
Those who first learn about it believe it has something to do with hearing, although the ear is merely the beginning. In truth, auditory processing is a brain function.
